EASTER IN MURCIA

Carvings of Salzillo, the essence of the "huerta" - vegetable garden - and Nazarenes giving out sweets, Easter cakes and other presents, make this Holy Week unique in our country. 

In Murcia, there are brotherhoods whose origin is from the late Middle Ages, when at the beginning of the 15th century a plague and famine lessened a population which searched in faith prompt solutions. 

Over the years the number of brotherhoods increased, and currently there are 16 that have thousands of "estantes" (people who carry the thrones) and penitent Nazarenes.
